Migraines are the result of a neurological disease associated with throbbing pain, nausea, tiredness, and sensitivity to light and noise. And while that doesn’t sound like the makings of a romantic evening, it turns out that orgasms can help.
A 2006 study published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry found that cluster headaches can be immediately improved through sexual activity. More recently, the Association of Migraine Disorders confirmed it: The endorphins released during an orgasm can provide rapid pain relief for migraines, too.
Their research included a survey that showed about a third of respondents reported that sex was a “reliable” way to relieve the pain. Even more — 60% — said they felt at least considerably better.
So, do orgasms help migraines?
Most say yes.
However, it’s worth noting that it’s not a fail-safe cure. Some people who have bad migraines say that sex can make their headache symptoms worse. The Association of Migraine Disorders thinks that may be connected with the physical activity involved in sex, so if you’re looking to help your headache with an orgasm, it may be better to get yourself there using a vibrator instead.
